April 1, 1968 TWA created the "foreign accent service and paper dresses!
Flight Attendants soon began carrying staplers and tape
in an attempt to keep their dresses from falling off during the service.

April 1, 1968 TWA took a step in a new direction - the Foreign Accent Service. Creating an international theme Flight Attendants were outfitted in paper fashions reflecting the in-flight service cuisine. One size fits all, paper dresses with a French, British, Italian or American design soon graced the TWA skies. Laugh with us as we share our paper skies.

These were our “ Foreign Accent” outfits.   We wore them around the end of 68 to around 69 or 70.   They were just before our Dalton uniforms shown on an earlier photo.   If we wore the toga , the food was Italian, the wench, British,   etc.   Sometimes commissary and in-flight messed up and we had an continental blend.   We picked up these outfits at the “Hostess Office”.   The Polka- dot ones that Barbara mentioned were worn on our blue-chip flights out of LGA to ORD, every 15min. to the hour.   We also served the hot deli sandwiches and cold beer.   I remember hearing about a crew that was flying the ORD turns out of LGA,   supposingly to return 5hours later, that got stuck in a snow storm in ORD with only their paper dresses for 3 days.   This was before the polka-dot.   It use to be a two piece gold and silver paper lame skirt and blouse.   Most of the time I had to wear the Manhattan penthouse outfit.   Every time you stretched to reach anything in the galley, it ripped.   You always travelled with a roll of tape. With a good crew, it was a lot of fun.

Barbara
I too wore the paper dresses---coast to coast.   Remember having to carry your standard uniform in case the dress ripped (always)?   I liked   the English wench the best.   It was flattering to most of us as well as the Manhattan (first time ever of wearing pants while working).   Like you, hated the French “foil”.   The Italian was okay.   Thank God I never wore the “poka dots”!   Yes, those were the days and somewhere I have pictures.

How many outfits did you have that were paper?   Was it easy to get another paper one when you accidentally tore your dress?   Was your paper dress on the planes for certain routes?   Did you take off and land in the “Paper Dress?”
Boy, cute memories----     What year did this go on?   Fun times I bet!

Jane
Yes, based in ORD, we flew west alot.   On ORD to PHX, alot of us wore our bathing suits, and sandals.   It was great!   I was 20 yrs old, as were my fellow F/A’s.   Loved the Toga and English Serving Dress.   Hated, the French and NY Penthouse!   Too much foil!
Those were the days!!

Leslie
Bathing suits??? You HOT babes!!!! NO WAY I’d put my bathing suit on for anyone--much less to work a flight!!! So are these actual F/A’s on this poster?? Anyone know them??

Whoo-ee did I wear those “cuties” ! .They were mandatory on coast to coast flts.I flew out of SFO at the time...we did everything in our power to NOT wear them....the kicker was....when TWA found out they were FLAMABLE....the whole demeaning policy ...went “up in smoke”....so to speak. The gold foil was fun for all the aisle seats....the material didn’t bend when you did...whoo-ee

Cheryl
whoo-ee is right, thank goodness for pettipants, ha ha. I got caught in a rain storm once coming home from flight in the Toga, same effect as a wet paper towel. The original plan was to have the paper dresses, menu, and meal match, which didn’t last long. We carried tape for tears and scissers for “alterations,” and they could get very short when trying to make sure the hem was even.

Jerri
These were before my time, however I did wear one to Bill Borden’s retirement dinner and I wore the Manhatten Penthouse (black one) at the request of Joanne Capece and actually met (ickkkkkkkk) Carl Icahn at the event.   I still have it here in my TWA Collection of memorabilia.   I can’t imagine doing any service or wearing it for real as it is totally paper!!!!!!   Guess those were really the days!!!!

Esther
I also wore them coast to coast.   Our flight engineers always carried stapler’s with them to make the armholes fit.   They were very hot to wear.   I remember going non routine and thank heaven’s we carried our regular uniform with us.   “Those Were the Days!”

Grant
Great stories!   I heard that the dye from the black one tended to “bleed” a bit, especially if you were prone to sweating.   Did f/a’s put them on on the plane or where?
Did everyone wear the same one for a paticular flight?
I can’t imagine a crew walking through the terminal in that gold number.

Barbara
Grant we did.   You received two dresses before your flight....one for the outbound and one for the return.   You either changed on the plane or in a restroom close by.   If the theme for the outbound was Italian (then everyone wore it).   There was no mix or match.   However, you could coordinate your stockings, shoes and jewelry with the theme.   I remember wearing gold stockings and gold shoes with the French outfit....sandals with the Italian, white stockings and one-inch flat shoes with the English and black with the Manhattan.   I’ve forgotten the exact date but I think the late 60’s or 1970.   I think it was less than a year we did this promotion.

During the strike while working at one of my many jobs, I met the man who created the paper dresses when he worked at TWA. He was “let go”, and laughed that it had been a really Bad idea. I love hearing these stories! Does anyone else have more pictures?

Karen
Jeannette   You mentioned the beer on the blue chip flights and the polka dot dresses.   Do you remember the original concept was to serve beer out of the small kegs (I believe they were called pony kegs) from the cart, the only problem was that as usual no one tested the theory of serving from a keg in a pressurized aircraft.   There was a lot of foam served but not much beer.

Paulette
...and getting back to the Manhattan Penthouse paper outfit..for some reason we got stuck with those alot...problem was..they were one long piece...had to roll paper dress to the ground every time one had to use the bathroom...it was g r o s s !   .but ah..the memories!
